Family: Berberidaceae Some Common Names: Southern waxmyrtle, waxberry, tallow berry, candleberry, tallow shrub, candleberry myrtle, northern bayberry, small waxberry. Pipperidge (and Pepperidge) Bush, Holy Thorn, Sowberry, Berberry, Wild Oregon Grape... Some Common Uses: The basic use is for astringents and stimulants. It has been shown to be useful in jaundice, diarrhea and in large doses as an emetic. When gargled, it is useful for inflammation to the throat and is great for gums. The wax from the fruit consists of palmitic and mysristic acids, and some glycerides. Some other uses of the wax are for dysentery and internal ulcers.
