Recent studies have focused on skin cancer and its possible therapeutic effects. Bloodroot was a traditional medicine used by American Indians to treat fever and rheumatism. Other uses included treatment of ulcers, ringworm, skin infections, and for producing dyes in red, orange, and pink. It has enjoyed some commercial success in toothpaste and as a mouthwash.
