Family: Scrophlariaceae Common Names: Culver ‘s Root, Black Root, Culver's Physic, Bowman Root, Tall Speedwell… Some Common Uses: Native American Indians used black root to treat a variety of ailments including a laxative. Modern medicine used it to promote bile production in the liver and gall bladder. It has properties as a chologaogue, cathartic, emetic, diaphoretic, laxative and anti-spasmodic.
