Family: Compositae Common Names: Blessed Thistle, Marian Thistle, Mary Thistle, and Mediterranean Milk Thistle... Some Common Uses: for over 2000 years, most commonly for the treatment of liver and gall bladder diseases. The whole plant is edible and aid in digestion. The leaves and seeds have been given to aid in low milk flow, coughs, depression, and spleen problems. It reduces the damage due to alcohol toxins in chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and cadmium poisoning. It also has diuretic, emetic, hepatic, diaphoretic and stimulant qualities. It has been shown to have qualities that lower cholesterol, reduces insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes who has cirrhosis and reduces growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical and prostate cancers.
