Family: Birthwort (Aristolochiaceae) Common Names: Virginia snakeroot, birthwort, Dutchmanspipe, pelican flower, sangrel, sangrel-root, serpentaria, serpentary root, snakeroot, snakeweed, thick birthwort... Some Common Uses: pioneers used it to cure rattlesnake bites, coughs, toothaches, stomach upsets and to aid in childbirth. Today the plant is known for its properties as an antidote, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge, stimulant and tonic.
