Herb Classifications The way dry herbs are stored dramatically effects how long they will keep. If you store them in plastic bags in sun lit places, they will not keep very long. Plastic bags are not a good choice for storing herbs, unless they are airtight sealed. If you store them under a vacuum seal, in airtight containers, or in sealed glass jars in a dark, cool place they can keep a very long time. When you first buy the herbs, it is a good idea to become familiar with how they smell. As they lose their fragrance, they also lose their potency alteratives - herbs that generally alter an existing condition in the body by strengthening or stimulating various systems, and eliminating waste from the bloodstream anti-inflammatories - herbs that help reduce inflammation antimicrobials - herbs that inhibit reproduction and growth of harmful bacteria, fungi, or protozoa astringents - herbs that reduce inflammation of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes cardiovascular tonics - herbs that strengthen the physical integrity of the heart and blood vessels, moderate blood pressure, and increase circulation
